CEL’s volunteers participate in historical monument maintenance at Island House Conservation Studies Centre
China Everbright Limited (“CEL”, stock code: 165.HK) jointly organised a volunteer programme with World Wide Fund (“WWF”) Hong Kong for a historical monument maintenance activity on 17 November 2017. Under the guidance of WWF’s staff, CEL’s volunteers assisted in maintaining the garden inside Island House Conservation Studies Centre.
Island House was the former residence of Chief Secretary for the New Territories, it was built at the beginning of the 20th century and declared a heritage monument in 1983 according to the “Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance”. In 1986, the custodianship of the monument was handed to WWF-Hong Kong and has since operated as a Conservation Studies Centre. There are over 140 identified species of plant within the premise. After the introduction and briefing of the instructor, volunteers helped with the lawn maintenance in the garden by planting and cleaning up the grass. Through joining the activity, volunteers can have a better understanding of the importance of conservation and adopting sustainable living solutions.
CEL is a corporation committed to corporate social responsibility. In the past few years, CEL has organised a number of volunteer services including a visit to elderly home, special child care centre, sheltered workshop, supported Food Angel’s Food Rescue and Food Assistance Program by taking part in preparing the “Food Angel Meals” and served the meal boxes to the elderlies, joined the “Sowers Action Challenging” for four consecutive years, as well as oraganising the Parent-Child Visiting Program to Lifeline Express Eye-Train Hospital in Shandong, Heilongjiang, Guiyang and Jilin. All these activities received good response and support from CEL staff. From 2016 to 2017, CEL was awarded the “Drive for Corporate Citizenship Volunteer Team” logo for 2 consecutive years from Hong Kong Productivity Council to recognize the contributions made by the volunteer team. CEL will organise similar activities in the future and hope that these volunteer services can provide opportunities for its staff to serve the community in leisure time.
